Event 16: Three Women Left

Three women are cat-fighting for the title of "Last Women Standing".

Our lovely ladies include:

Kristin and Annie are at the same table and Kristin has made her #1 goal to be the Last Women Standing. "My goal before that was to have a good dinner. I like to set the bar low" said Fletcher.

Jacqueline's first goal is to make the money. With 51 players left and 45 getting paid, it's definitely doable.

Annie's been at the same table the entire day. "Amazing, and I'm still here" laughed the lady they call Grandma. Annie wants to make the money, then she wants to win.

Kane used to play black-jack but once she discovered sit-n-go's years ago, she can't get enough of em. She just loves hold-em.

All three of our ladies are very likable so my rooting interest is split three ways.

Right now Annie has the lady lead with 315,000.

Event 12: Gomolinski Doubles Through Eriquezzo

Rich Gomolinski got all-in pre-flop against big stack Ryan Eriquezzo.  Rich held the boss pair, pocket Aces, and was crushing Ryan's KQ.

The board ran dry for Ryan and Rich doubled up to 4.25 million, taking the chip lead.  Ryan was left with ~2.4 million.   "I've been on a little rush" Rich said.

Event 16: Spano Spanked

Mike Delvecchio lost his first heads up match then told me, "Now I have to win a million in a row so I can cash". He's not looking ahead, taking it one match at a time.

How does he keep his focus after playing intense matches all day long? "I try to relax when I'm not playing to keep my mind off of poker" said Delvecchio.

His friends Adam and Victoria, who also play poker, have been diligently watching Mike from a couple of close-by chairs.

Apparently my motivational skills are impressive.  Jeff Finkelstein is up to 2.9 million and second in chips.  During the break, he recounted for me how he doubled up.

Action had folded to him in the small blind and he opened for 105k.  The big blind flat-called.  On the flop of K 7 7, Jeff checked, his opponent bet 165k, and Jeff called.  Turn was a blank and Jeff led out for 150k.  The big blind just flatted again.  River was another blank and Jeff shoved, getting the call. 

The big blind showed pocket Aces.  Jeff had 72 suited for trip 7s to take the pot and chip way up to 2.9 million.

At the end of the level, players took a break while the orange 1k chips were colored up.

The HOSE-players got moved to the poker room at dinner and they're now down to 21 players.  'Miami' John Cernuto is holding on, but short-stacked.  Average stack is ~35k.

Event 16: Ace - King - Thrice

AK three times in a row? A good thing or a bad thing?

For Thomas Rodriguez it meant one double up, one 40K knock-out, then finally a dusting off of 90,000 to Mike Melena who woke up with pocket Aces.

Rodriguez and Melena have been sitting next to each other at the same table since the start of this Event at 11am.

"I got my entertainment times 2" said Melena who was laughing at Rodriguez' comic relief.

Thomas showed a sweet 6-3 offsuit bluff while I was watching, but a few hands later his 70,000 stack suffered termination.

Q-J of clubs couldn't hit a brick wall and Opponent's 7-7 held up.

Rodriguez hit the rail but told me he was looking forward to trying again tomorrow.

Event 12: Restifo Retired

After Jeff Finkelstein opened for a raise, Carl Restifo moved all-in.  Jeff looked him up with pocket 6s.  Carl held KJ and would need help to survive.

He got none on the flop of 6 3 3 , which gave Jeff a full house.  A King on the turn gave him a glimmer of hope, but the river was a blank and Carl was busted.

William Hart began today as the chip leader.  He's been up and down a lot since then.

On a flop of A T 7 with two clubs, he just found himself all-in and covered by the player on his left.  William held AJ for top pair.  His opponent held QT of clubs for middle pair with flush draw.  William managed to fade all those outs as the last two came offsuit 3 4 and William doubled up to ~1.4 million.

Blinds increased to 25k/50k with 4k antes.

Julian Miranda was all-in holding AQ against the pocket 5s of Niko Markatos.  Julian caught an Ace on the turn to take the lead and the pot.  He doubled up to ~900k.

Event 12: Two More Departures

A short-stack was all-in and Jack Marji (Yonkers, NY) made the call with AQ.  He was racing against pocket Tens.  The board came Q 9 8 3 7 and Jack took the pot, sending another player to the rail.  Jack is now up to ~1.2 million.

On the next table over, a player opened up front for 120k and Niko Markatos moved in on him.  The short-stack called all-in, showing pocket Queens.  Nike held KQ and was drawing slim, but a King on the flop was all he needed.  Niko took the pot, sending another player home.

A couple hands ago Chris Galvin, our fourth place finisher of this tournament last year, had 480,000 chips. So how in the world could I just see him walking out of the Event Center?

Hand 2) Three-way all in action. Again Chris has the best hand. Galvin's JJ against Opponent's 66 and Mark Videtto 88.

David Zeitlin is up to 2.38 million and the closest competitor to chip leader Ryan Eriquezzo.

Jeff Finkelstein (Las Vegas, NV) is up to 1.3 million and he credits me.  On an earlier pass through the room when few players were over 1 million, Jeff asked "What do I have to do to get my picture in the blog?".

Event 16: Roland is Rolling

Roland Israelashvili origninally from Republic of Georgia, is excited to be sitting on 210,000 chips. "I have know idea what I'm doing; just getting lucky," joked Roland.

How did he quickly rise up to one of the largest stacks in the room? Israelashvili hit quad fours. "I played it good" said Roland who flopped a set then turned quads and slo played em.

Roland now lives in NY.

Event 12: Patel Being Patient

Seated just to the left of Ryan Eriqezzo's monster stack is Tiku Patel of Cherry Hill, NJ.  Tiku's got about 750k, which is a bit below the average.  With 20k/40k blinds, he's still got some fold equity with over 18 big blinds.

Tiku works in sales and only plays tournaments occasionally.  This is actually his first-ever multi-day event.  "It's kinda cool making it this long in a big event" he said.  He only paid one entry -- never busted out and re-entered -- and he's already guaranteed to cash for at least $831.

When I asked about sitting to the left of the big stack, he replied "it's a little intimidating".

Don, a software engineer, hit a hand when his A-7 paid dividends.

"I had A-7 and the flop was 7-7-A, and my Opponent had a 7 in his hand" said Ryan.

It helps that his Opponent was the former table chip leader who stacked off half his chips to Ryan.

I asked Ryan if he designs any on-line poker software or if he knew how to beat their action heavy software. He laughed telling me he only works in banking software.

Event 16: Chow Time

Scanning the room we see at least one stack with more than 300k. There are a lot of stacks in the 150-200k range as we're on the prowl and planning to update chip counts in a bit.

Event 12: Warnings Issued to Table 3

In a big hand on table 3 they were at the turn with a board of K 5 3 Q with two spades.  John McGuinness (Toms River, NJ) was all-in against Julian Miranda.  Julian was making a decision for his tournament live, so he tanked for a bit, then exposed his hand, which was A5 of spades.

The floor was called to make a ruling.  Julian was given a warning and if he exposes his cards again with action pending, he will get a ten-hand penalty.  He was still having trouble making a decision.  Then John turned over his cards -- pocket Aces.  He was also given a warning for exposing his hand.  Julian eventually folded and John collected this pot, chipping up to ~900k.

The entire table was issued a warning and if anyone exposes their cards with action pending, they will get a penalty.

John is the brother of Mike McGuinness, who also made day 2 of this event.  "We're the next Mizrachi brothers" John said.  He has a picture of his daughter in his card protector which he holds up proudly and says "It's all in here.  This almost won me a bracelet".  Sure enough, John was heads-up with Bahador Ahmadi in the $2,500 Limit/No Limit Mixed Hold'em event at the 2009 WSOP.  John finished 2nd for $172,227.

Event 12: Miranda Busts Patella

Borgata regular Martha Patella got her last chips in holding AK against Julian Miranda, who held pocket Queens.  I guess Martha should have heeded the Miranda Warning, as the board came T 5 4 4 6 and brought her no help.

Martha reported to the rail in 51st place, earning $660.

Joanne Monteavarro has also busted out.

Event 12: Monteavarro Triples

After seat 1 limped utg, Joanne Monteavarro (cutoff) moved in for her last 65k.  Naz Tyrewala re-raised to 165k straight.  Seat 1 then moved all-in for over half a million.  Naz was a bit distressed by this, but decided to let his hand go (saying later he folded AQ).

Joanne held AQ offsuit and was racing against pocket Jacks.  The board came A A 7 5 K and Joanne tripled up.

(If Naz had made the call with AQ, he would have chopped the main pot with Joanne, but won the side-pot, busting that player and chipping up to nearly 2 million.)

We've found a couple of first time Borgata players who have their sites on more than just today's $30,000 first prize. One of them is Kelly Fleming (Catawissa, PA) who's an aspiring pro. "I'm trying to save money and take a shot," she says.

So far Fleming hasn't been involved with too many hands. "Very easy decisions, (pocket) kings or jack-four."

The two big stacks on table two were bound to get into a confrontation eventually.  It just happened on the turn with a board of T♥ 3♥ 2♥ T♣.  All the chips went in the pot.  Anthony Maio (Jamison, PA) held 5♥4♥ and had flopped a flush with straight-flush re-draw.  Ryan Eriquezzo held pocket 9s (two pair) and was drawing thin (4 outs).

It helps to run good.  The river delivered the T♠, giving Ryan Tens-full of 9s to beat Anthony's flush.  The stacks were close and had to be counted down, but Ryan had more and in the end, collected the huge pot.  He's now sitting behind ~2 million and leading the field.

Julian Miranda (Union City, NJ) was counting his double-up, but it didn't come through.  on a flop of A 5 2, he was all-in against big stack William Hart.  Julian held AQ for top pair.  William held A7 and was dominated. 
 
Before Julian could collect those chips, the dealer ran the last two community cards: K 2.  They ended up chopping the pot, each with Aces-up and playing the King kicker on the board.

Event 17: Live from the Poker Room

Reports from the Poker Room has one player at 36k, but is keeping his true identity a secret.

Buglion Watches Annie Keep the Table in Line

3 sons, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren are nice, but flopping trips in the big blind at Borgata is even nicer, especially when you knock out a player .

"I didn't even look," says Annie Kane (Forked River, NJ), "I didn't know what I had until the flop." What she has now is 180k and the chip lead after sending a player to the rail while holding 6 9.

Annie simply shrugs and laughs while raking in the pot after her opponent was all-in with A 8 on a board of 6 6 8.

This Granny says she's been playing poker forever and finished 4th in a tournament a long, long time ago. "I didn't know what I was doing then and I don't know what I'm doing now, but I get very lucky."

Annie and John Buglion (Commack, NY) have been side by side all day and you get the sense he'll be adopted by the end of the dinner break. Buglion says he's been struggling with Annie on his left and she quickly chimes in, "I tried giving you chips, but you wouldn't take them."

Annie has a decent lead over her nearest competitor, Judy Urban (Plymouth Meeting, PA) who has 150k, but there are a lot of stacks between 100k and 120k.

Approximately 220 players remain with an average stack of 54k.

Event 12: Rowe & Dominiak Make a Million

On the river with a board of 9 5 2 6 T, Nicole Rowe moved in, putting her opponent to the test.  He let it go and she collected the pot, showing just a Ten.  After collecting that pot, Nicole is up to ~1.1 million, becoming the first woman to reach the million-chip-mark.

Event 12: Pecoraro Having a Bad Day

Today is just not Peter Pecoraro's day.  Peter is here from Billerica, MA, to play this event and although he started out short, he built his stack up nicely, only to double up another player when he ran pocket Queens into pocket Aces.

It didn't stop there.  Robert Nguyen (W. New York NJ) got all-in pre-flop against Peter, who was way ahead with pocket Jacks.  Then a 3 hit the flop and once again Peter was shipping a double-up to another player.

That includes Shawn Anthony Smith, Jr, who never showed up for day two. He's now accomplished a 'Vinny Vinh', who is infamous for cashing twice in the WSOP by never showing up for the following day after accumulating a decent-sized stack.

It is also bubble-time.  Exactly 101 players remain, which means they are playing hand-for-hand until one more is eliminated.

Event 15: Second Round Underway

Mike Betley was all-in with pocket Tens and was racing against a player with AQ.  Mike couldn't look and turned away from the table.  When a player said "flush", Mike looked back to see that it was not the case.  "My heart normally beats normally at 60 beats per minute, [that's a great resting heart rate] but it just spiked up to about 180."

Israelshvilli goes in the tank, something he didn't have to do very often at the final table of yesterday's 7 card stud tournament. Israelshvilli eventually folds and shows two pairs 6s & 4s, the exact same hand as the SB.

Good fold for Israelshvilli, bad shove for the SB as Ernest tables 5 7 for the nut straight. The board goes brick, brick and Ernst knocks out one player, while the table congratulates Israelshvilli for getting away from his hand.

The Pennsylvania blizzard didn't keep Anthony Pinkney (Cleveland Heights, OH) from playing in today's Deep Stack. Pinkney left the Cleveland area 11 am Wednesday, but didn't arrive at Borgata until 5 am Thursday.

"We had to pull off the road a couple times," said Pinkney, who was stuck 6 times and in the car 18 hours, twice as long as expected. "Triple-a wasn't helping anybody."

Pinkney is all-in for his last 6k and gets two callers. The other two players check it down until the 6♥ hits the river. Scott Tuchman (Mays Landing, NJ) fires into the dry side pot and the third player folds.

On a flop of 9 5 4, Mike got all his chips in and called by Elizabeth, who held pocket 8s.  Mike's pocket 5s had flopped a set and left her drawing to just two remaining 8s, or runner-runner for a straight.

The last two came 2 9 and Mike filled up to double-up.  He's now sitting behind about 770k and challenging for the chip lead.  Elizabeth was left with less than 100k.

A four-way confrontation took place on table nine.  Alex Takounakis of Alexandria, VA (utg) limped, then Glynn Myles of Pheonix, AZ (utg+1) raised to 27k.  Martha Patella (Massapequa Park, NY) was next to act and she flats the 27k.  Then Yves Grenon (Ottowa, ON) moved all-in.

Everyone else dove for cover and it was back to Alex, who moved in for less than Yves.  Glynn opted out.  Martha gave it some thought, then open-mucked her pocket 9s.  Alex held pocket 5s and was crushed by Yves' pocket Jacks.  The board came 9 5 4 2 9 and Yves took the pot, chipping up to ~210k while Alex took the walk to the rail.  Martha was congratulated on her solid lay-down.

The heads up tournament is underway and there's an intriguing match featuring Borgata regular Bill "Big Daddy" Blanda (Galveston, TX) and Matt Affleck (Seattle, WA), who's making his first trip to the casino.

Affleck's a young West Coast player who made two deep runs in the WSOP Main Event, including a heartbreaking 15th place finish in 2010. Blanda, a South Philly native, has three Borgata wins on his resume, the most recent in the 2008 - $1,500 Event ($207,000).

Thanks to the luck of the re-draw, four ladies landed at the same table -- table four -- to start day two.  Vicki Renfrow (Pine Knoll Shores, NC) is in seat 5, Nicole Rowe (Salisbury Mills, NY) is in seat 7, Elizabeth Grey-Pardo (Yonkers, NY) is in seat 8, and Kathryn Dougherty (Allen, TX) is in seat 9.

This situation didn't last long, as Vicki moved in on the first hand and got action from both Elizabeth (button) and Heung Yoon of Woodbridge, VA (bb).  On the flop of A J 2 with two spades, Heung led out for 76k and Elizabeth shoved (~85k on top).  Heung called, showing AQ offsuit for top pair.  Elizabeth held KT off for nothing but a gutshot to Broadway.  Vicki was drawing slim with pocket 9s.

The turn card delivered the knockout blow.  A Queen completed the straight for Elizabeth.  A 7 on the river made no difference.  Vicki was busted and Elizabeth collected both the main and side pots.

Now only three women remain on table four.

There's three way all-in action and a set of 3s takes down the pot sending Borrero to the rail.

Poker is always seeing a new influx of talent and some of it has to do with the calender. Beata Wielgoszewski (Plainville, CT) is less than a year removed from her 21st birthday and making her first trip to Borgata. She says she's "relieved" to be a "legal" poker player and while she doesn't have a lot of life experience she's played a lot of cards and is putting her college education to good use.

Wielgoszewski is a psych major at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut and as a senior has a few days off a week to try and take advantage of unsuspecting
players or future patients.

Wassup Gorrilla?

It's a busy day at the Event Center and in the middle of the chaos I here, "Wassup Gorilla?" Dwyte Pilgrim the 2010 Borgata Poker Open Champion is in the house and ready for some love.

He's been on a whirlwind since winning the WPT title in September and glad to be back at his home away from home. Pilgrim is playing in the Heads Up tournament and has some extra time as the start has been pushed to 1 pm.
